The school was established in the year 1898 under the name of State Normal School and opened its door to the students for the first time in the year 1902. The school was renamed in 1935 as State Teachers' College at Frostburg and started offering a 4-year degree program that led to a Bachelors of Science in Elementary Education degree. In 1963, the school again got a new name- Frostburg State College. In 1897, Frostburg received university status and thus the state college became the Frostburg State University. This was the history of the Frostburg State University.
