Since technology has enabled libraries to catalog their books, periodicals, videos, microfilm, and micro fiche, on the computer instead of in a card catalog, library science students will learn the latest in cataloging techniques that will enable them to use existing systems and design their own. This is a valuable skill as many libraries struggle to keep up with technology. There are many referencing software programs that can be used in small or large libraries.
After completing their degree in library science they will be ready to work in major and minor library systems in schools, government agencies, corporations, and law firms. Courses include cataloging, using computer reference systems, archiving, document preservation, research, and developing storage systems that are easy to use. Those who have an attention to detail, who are organized, and who enjoy cataloging lots of information into logical order will enjoy earning a degree in library science. After graduation, students will be able to find employment in most fields that need strong research and organizational personnel to help keep libraries running efficiently.
